Monferrato is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Langhe and Roero, due to its unique characteristics. It is a succession of hills, some gentle, some steep, some green, some wild, with woods and vineyards. A historic region of Piedmont, it is located almost entirely in the province of Alessandria and occupies a large part of the province of Asti. Originally the Marquisate of Monferrato, it was an ancient pre-unification state in southern Piedmont. A fascinating territory, where the dominant crop is the vine, whose varieties allow for the production of excellent and prized wines, now famous throughout the world for Barbera, Freisa, Grignolino and many others.
