"Saint Paule de Vence"
This small, romantic medieval village, entirely pedestrianised, lies behind Cagne-sur-Mer, clinging to the mountainside to escape Saracen attacks. The cobbled streets of Saint-Paul de Vence, surrounded by its fortifications and full of craft shops and artists' studios, charm all those who venture up here, far from the fashionable glitz of the coast. With its 40 inhabitants, this village boasts romantic little squares, spectacular views of the valley, charming Provençal corners and the Chapelle du Rosaire painted by Matisse. Among its narrow streets, stairways and fountains, you will find corners of pure poetry, provided you avoid the rush hours when buses pour out hordes of tourists in search of souvenirs. It is home to artisans and painters and has always been a favourite destination for artists and intellectuals. It is worth staying overnight, when the village empties of visitors and the sound of cicadas fills the evening silence, lingering between a romantic dinner in one of the village's restaurants and a romantic stroll along the walls, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the valley and the sea.
